Discovering Reykjavik and the Golden Circle Tour: A Journey Through Iceland’s Heart

Iceland is a land of stunning contrasts, where fiery volcanoes meet icy glaciers, and vibrant cities coexist with breathtaking natural landscapes. At the heart of this enchanting country lies Reykjavik, the capital and largest city, serving as the perfect base for exploring the iconic Golden Circle.

I was so lucky to pick up a layover in this beautiful country. In this blog, I’ll take you on a journey through Reykjavik and the highlights of the Golden Circle tour, showcasing why this destination is a must-visit for travelers.

Leaving from Chicago, I discovered that the flight to Iceland is a manageable six hours, making it a perfect weekend getaway! Unfortunately, I didn’t have the luxury of a full weekend, so I wanted to make sure I make the most of the the time I had available. I decided to join the popular Golden Circle tour, eager to explore the breathtaking landscapes and unique sights Iceland has to offer.

Reykjavik is more than just a gateway to Iceland’s natural wonders; it’s a vibrant city rich in history, culture, and creativity. With its colorful buildings, cozy cafes, and unique museums, Reykjavik offers a captivating blend of modernity and tradition.

The Golden Circle is one of Iceland’s most popular tourist routes, featuring three major attractions: Þingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss Waterfall. Each stop offers a unique glimpse into the country’s natural beauty and geological wonders.

The tour can vary depending on the tour provider, the inclusions, and the time of year. Typically, prices range from about $50 to $150 per person for a standard day tour. Some premium tours that include additional activities or meals may cost more. It’s always a good idea to check different operators for the best deals and options!

One of our first stops was the Geysir Geothermal Area, which is home to the famous Strokkur geyser. This geyser erupts every few minutes, shooting hot water up to 30 meters in the air. The bubbling hot springs and vibrant mineral deposits create a surreal landscape, perfect for photography and exploration.

Visiting the Geysir Geothermal Area offers a unique glimpse into the raw power of nature and is a highlight on the Golden Circle tour. The sights, sounds, and smells of this geothermal wonderland make it a memorable stop for any traveler.

Our next stop on the Golden Circle was Gullfoss, a breathtaking waterfall that cascades down two tiers into a rugged canyon. The sheer power of the water is awe-inspiring, and on sunny days, you might even catch a glimpse of a rainbow forming in the mist.

There are various viewpoints along the trails that provide stunning vistas of this natural wonder. Just keep in mind that reaching the waterfall requires quite a bit of walking, but trust me, it’s absolutely worth it! Just be sure to bring waterproof clothing and shoes as you will need it if you want to get close to the waterfall.

Speaking of clothing, be sure to pack layers, as Icelandic weather can change rapidly, I learned that first hand.

Þingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that holds great significance both geologically and historically. Located only about 30 miles northeast of Reykjavik, this was our last stop and a breathtaking destination where you can witness the dramatic landscapes formed by the rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

This rift is not only a stunning visual spectacle but also a key feature in understanding the geological forces that shaped Iceland.

Beyond its geological wonders, Þingvellir is rich in history. It was the site of Iceland’s first parliament, the Althing, established in 930 AD. This gathering marked the foundation of Icelandic democracy and continues to be a symbol of national identity. Visitors can walk through the ancient assembly site and explore the surrounding landscapes that have witnessed centuries of Icelandic history.

The park served as a filming location for various scenes, of the famous HBO Show “Games of Thrones”, particularly those set in the lands Beyond the Wall.

As our tour came to an end and time was running short, we managed to squeeze in a visit to Hallgrímskirkja before heading back to the hotel. This iconic church, with its striking architecture inspired by Iceland’s basalt columns, towers majestically over the city. Climbing to the top offers breathtaking panoramic views of Reykjavik and the surrounding mountains, making it a perfect final stop on our whirlwind adventure. The blend of natural beauty and unique design truly encapsulates the spirit of Iceland, leaving us with unforgettable memories as we wrapped up our layover.
