Recently, my daughter and I embarked upon a 7 day Mediterranean cruise, and one of our stops was Civitavecchia. This charming port city, situated along Italy’s coastline, offers a nice mix of history and local culture.
We were particularly excited about this stop, as it offered us the most time on land during our trip. With a full day ahead of us, we were determined to take full advantage of the opportunity to explore. Not only did we want to explore this city but also make our way to Rome.
One of the most charming landmarks at Civitavecchia’s port is the statue of a sailor kissing a woman, often affectionately called the “Sailor and Woman” statue. This touching piece captures a beautiful moment of love and reunion, perfectly embodying the joy that comes when sailors return home after long journeys at sea.
The statue depicts a sailor in his crisp uniform leaning down to kiss a woman, their faces filled with happiness and affection. It’s a heartwarming reminder of the emotional sacrifices that come with a life at sea, resonating deeply with many visitors—especially those who have experienced similar reunions.
You’ll often see tourists and locals alike stopping to admire it, making it a lovely focal point in the port area. Whether you’re arriving from a cruise or simply exploring Civitavecchia, this delightful statue is sure to warm your heart and add a touch of romance to your visit!
After soaking in the sights of Civitavecchia, we decided to take advantage of the short train journey to Rome. The train station is conveniently located near the port, making it easy to hop on and experience the grandeur of the capital. The ride takes about an hour, offering scenic views of the Italian countryside.
Once we arrived in Rome, the possibilities were endless. From the iconic Colosseum to the stunning Vatican City, we found ourselves immersed in art, history, and culture. After a day of exploration, we returned to Civitavecchia, and back unto our vessel.
Whether you’re in Civitavecchia for just a few hours or planning a longer stay, this charming port city is the perfect prelude to your Roman adventure
