Guatemala is a country in Central America, bordered by Mexico to the north and west, Belize to the northeast, Honduras to the east, and El Salvador to the southeast. Known for its rich Mayan history, it’s home to impressive archaeological sites like Tikal and Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The country also boasts stunning landscapes, from volcanic mountains and cloud forests to beautiful lakes like Lake Atitlán.
Guatemala has a diverse population, with a strong Indigenous heritage—Mayan culture plays a major role in the country’s identity, alongside Spanish colonial influence. The official language is Spanish, but many Indigenous languages are spoken throughout the country.
Despite being one of the region’s most biodiverse countries, Guatemala faces challenges such as poverty, political instability, and inequality. Agriculture, particularly coffee and bananas, is a key part of the economy, but the country is also working to grow its tourism and manufacturing sectors.
Guatemala’s climate varies by altitude, ranging from tropical to temperate. It’s known for vibrant traditions, such as colorful textiles, lively markets, and religious festivals like Semana Santa. Although tourism is growing, the country is still considered off-the-beaten-path for many travelers, offering a more authentic Central American experience.
