Isla Mujeres: A Perfect Getaway During My Cancun Layover

I’m always on the lookout for a great new hidden gem to explore. Recently, I had the opportunity to fly to Cancun, and I knew exactly how I wanted to spend may day there—visiting the stunning Isla Mujeres. This small island off the coast of Cancun has always intrigued me with its laid-back vibe, crystal-clear waters, and pristine beaches. With some careful planning, and the help of my friend, I made the most of my brief time on the island.

As mentioned above, I planned this trip with the help of a friend. One of my very good friends actually lives in Cancun, so when I mentioned to her that I would be in Cancun for the next 24 hours, she instantly suggested to go visit Isla Mujeres.

After arriving at the hotel, I relaxed by the pool until my friend Katharina was able to meet me at the hotel.

Once Katharina arrived, and after catching up, we grabbed a cab and headed straight to Puerto Juárez, the main ferry terminal to Isla Mujeres.

The ferry ride was short, just 15-20 minutes across the sparkling Caribbean waters. The cost of the ferry is just under $30, roundtrip for an adult and $21 for children.

Ferries leave Cancun’s Hotel Zone daily at 9:00am, 10:00am, 11:00am, 12:00pm, 1:00pm, 2:00pm, 4:00pm, 5:00pm, 6:00pm, 7:00pm.

Ferries leave Isla Mujeres at 10:00am, 11:00am, 12:00pm, 1:00pm, 2:00pm, 4:00pm, 5:00pm, 6:00pm, 7:00pm, 8:00pm.

For those interested in making the trip from Cancun International Airport to Isla Mujeres, it’s quite simple.

From the airport, you can take a taxi or a pre-arranged shuttle to Puerto Juárez. The ferry from Puerto Juárez runs frequently throughout the day and is an affordable, scenic way to reach the island.

Isla Mujeres itself is known for its quaint streets, vibrant marine life, and relaxed atmosphere. Once you’re on the island, you can rent a golf cart to explore its many beaches, including the famous Playa Norte, or visit the ancient Mayan ruins at Punta Sur.

Whether you’re snorkeling in the clear waters or enjoying fresh seafood at a beachfront restaurant, Isla Mujeres offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Cancun.

For me, the combination of ease in getting there, the beauty of the island, and having a local friend to show me around made this layover a mini-vacation I’ll never forget.
